CARONDELET HEALTH PARTNERS WITH LILLIBRIDGE TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN PHYSICIANS

Carondelet Health in Kansas City, MO has teamed up with Lillibridge to help it overcome growing competition from healthcare providers in Kansas. In the neighboring state, medical malpractice insurance costs are half those of Carondelet Health's home state of Missouri and new hospitals are springing up since Kansas does not require certificate of need.

Several years ago, Lillibridge bought and began managing Carondelet Health's three medical office buildings on the St. Joseph Medical Center campus, which is located just a half-block from the Kansas-Missouri state line. "Well-run and well-maintained medical office buildings are one of the primary ways to attract and retain physicians," notes Bruce L. Van Cleave, MD, president and chief executive officer of Carondelet Health, which is a member of the Ascension Health system.

Supporting Hospital and Physician Practice Growth

After Lillibridge acquired the buildings, it continued to invest in the properties. Mechanical systems, such as elevators, were upgraded and the décor of the public spaces was modernized. It also recently added a new roof to one facility.

Because all of the physician space in the three locations is essentially occupied, Lillibridge is working with the hospital to make a major addition to one property. The new wing will be designed to accommodate new and expanding practices focused on key growth areas for Carondelet Health, including cardiology, orthopedics and internal medicine.

"Lillibridge has been a great partner. They work very closely with us on our medical staff needs and in identifying and meeting community health needs," says Dr. Van Cleave.

Strong Partnership from the Start

Lillibridge began its relationship with Carondelet Health after Ascension Health brought in the firm to inventory its medical office buildings system-wide and evaluate Ascension Health's strategic options for the real estate. Based on Lillibridge's assessment, Carondelet Health management decided to sell the physician buildings on its St. Joseph Medical Center campus to sharpen its focus on clinical operations. It chose Lillibridge as the buyer through a competitive bidding process.

"Lillibridge has been one of our strongest partners since the very beginning," notes Dr. Van Cleave.
